Clinician Spotlight: Tomas Castellanos
Dr. Tomás Castellanos studied dentistry in Bogota-Colombia at the Universidad Javeriana, School of Dentistry, D.M.D. He gained an interest in aesthetics and oral rehabilitation, then attended the Military University of New Granada - CIEO, Certificate, and M.S. in Orthodontics.
Why did you decide to adopt T-Scan technology?
At the Javeriana University and CIEO, the emphasis was function and occlusion. It was crucial, but I confirmed during my clinical practice the importance of the mutually protected occlusion and muscle balance for the success of each treatment. Usually, I used articulating paper to check the static and dynamic occlusion and try to detect interferences and early contact points. The fact was I always was looking for a more accurate method, because I consider articulating paper an old and inconsistent process. I read some articles from Dr. Kerstein, and I decided to acquire my T-Scan.
How do you use T-Scan in your practice?
I started to analyze my cases specially for finalization in dynamic occlusion. I use it most frequently in patient consultation and aesthetics. In my opinion "the future is now." New technologies like T-Scan, Ortho-Digital, 3D ortho, and new generation of brackets like H4 are here to improve our practice and each day are more accessible for all professionals. Every patient is important and this is what we need to keep in mind all the time. In order to achieve the best results, you need the best technology. You also need to take the time to analyze and treat every person. We are using high-tech equipment, and it increases the credibility and quality in our procedures.
What is your favorite thing about T-Scan and what does it show you?
Always in my conferences, some doctors ask me, "What is the best retainer?" In my opinion, any appliance is efficient, as long as you have the muscle balance and the mutually protected occlusion. For that reason, when we use the T-Scan at the end of the treatment, it is easy to check and obtain an accurate analysis of the dynamic occlusion. I can decide with precision the requirement to reshape or reconstruct material as needed.
